Two Major Economics Conferences Highlight CIRANO Researchers

The month of May was marked by two major economics events in Quebec, bringing together the Canadian and international academic communities. The annual meetings of the Société canadienne de science économique (SCSE) and the Canadian Economics Association (CEA) highlighted the strong involvement of researchers affiliated with CIRANO, both in scientific organization and in the presentation of major research work.

The 59th Annual SCSE Conference took place from May 8 to 10, 2025, in Orford. This edition was led by two CIRANO members: Pierre-Carl Michaud (President of the SCSE) and Marie-Louise Leroux (President-Designate and Congress Chair). The scientific committee also included eight other CIRANO members, underscoring their key role in advancing economic science: Marine Carrasco (CIRANO, Université de Montréal), Raquel Fonseca (CIRANO, ESG UQAM), Catherine Haeck (CIRANO, ESG UQAM), Étienne Lalé (CIRANO, York University), Julien Martin (CIRANO, ESG UQAM), Florian Mayneris (CIRANO, ESG UQAM), Kevin Moran (CIRANO, Université Laval), and Markus Poschke (CIRANO, McGill).

From May 30 to June 1, the 59th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Economics Association (CEA) was held at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), bringing together over 1,000 participants. CIRANO supported the event through:

  • The CIRANO Innis Lecture delivered by Robert Clark (CIRANO, Queen’s University)

  • The CIRANO–JDI–Phelps–RIIB sessions, also organized annually by Robert Clark

Several CIRANO members played key roles in the program:

  • John W. Galbraith (CIRANO, McGill University) – Presidential Address: "Economic Activity During Extreme Events"

  • Erin Strumpf (CIRANO, McGill University) – Moderator of the CWEC Lunch with Shelly Lundberg (UC Santa Barbara)

  • Carole Vincent (Director of Knowledge Mobilization at CIRANO, ESPUM) – Spoke during the mentoring breakfast on knowledge mobilization

  • Marie Connolly (CIRANO, ESG UQAM) and Catherine Haeck (CIRANO, ESG UQAM) – Canadian Public Policy Special Lecture: "Ten Years of Research on Intergenerational Income Mobility in Canada and New Insights"
