As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, CIRANO hosted a breakfast discussion bringing together a great panel of speakers to discuss how we can improve our fight against breast cancer. Among key takeaways:
1. Empowering women to take action on their risk of developing breast cancer is essential. As Annie Slight, a survivor, and researchers Erin Strumpf and Tiffanie Perrault put it so well, women must have access to all information about themselves, including their breast density. It can save lives.
2. Although efforts have been made to make cancer data more accessible, it is still too difficult to conduct in-depth studies on breast cancer screening and diagnosis pathways in Quebec. Yet access to data for research could also save lives.
The panel brought together Erin Strumpf (McGill University), CIRANO Fellow, Tiffanie Perrault (Grand Valley State University), Cédric Baudinet from the Fondation cancer du sein du Québec, Dr. Jean Latreille from the Direction québécoise du cancer au ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux and Annie Slight from Dense Breasts Canada.
