This book is dedicated to the memory of Claude Montmarquette, professor emeritus of the University of Montreal, researcher, Fellow and founder of CIRANO. University graduates constitute a highly qualified workforce that is the source of quality jobs and at the heart of the creation of new knowledge and economic innovation. However, we observe that university education, whose accessibility still has limits according to social origin, is increasingly reflected in difficulties of insertion into the labor market.

This book raises fundamental questions, often avoided, about this important category of labour: what are the current forms of inequality in access to university degrees? What are the returns to education? What forms of discrimination in hiring affect university graduates of immigrant origin? Are we witnessing a phenomenon of persistent overqualification illustrated by a deficient capacity of absorption of university graduates by the productive system? In this book, specialists in the field present their analyses, which shed light on certain preconceived ideas and provide a scientific basis for debate and public action.
