Frédéric Marty, CNRS - Université Côte d'Azur researcher and CIRANO associate researcher gave a conference on algorithmic predictions: issues in terms of consumer protection and competition on Wednesday November 16, 2022.
The advantage linked to the control of data flows can translate for a dominant operator not only into an algorithmic advantage vis-à-vis its competitors but also into an increased market power vis-à-vis its consumers. Based on the analysis of the decisional practice of the US Federal Trade Commission, our contribution considers two dimensions of this question. First, what are the risks that may result from undue data mining to the detriment of consumers? Second, can these strategies be the source of an unfair competitive advantage and if so, how can they be remedied?
