Biography

A CIRANO Associate Researcher and Fellow since 2012, Sophie Meunier is Senior Research Scholar in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. She is also Co-Director of the EU Program, Faculty Associate of the Program in Law and Public Affairs (LAPA), the Liechtenstein Institute on Self-Determination (LISD), the Niehaus Center for Globalization and Governance (NCGG), and the Princeton Institute on International and Regional Studies (PIIRS) at Princeton. She is a Senior Research Fellow at the Wong Center for the Study of Multinational Corporations and a member of the Executive Board of the journal French Politics and the Editorial Board of the Journal of European Public Policy (since 2008).

Holding a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, her current work deals with the politics of hosting Chinese investment in Europe and in the US and, more generally, with European Foreign Direct Investment policy.

She was an elected member of the Executive Committee of the Council for European Studies (2009-2013), served on the Executive Board of the International Political Science Association's Research Committee on European Unification (2009-2012 and 2012-2016) and on the Executive Committee of the American Political Science's Association European Politics and Society Section (2010-2013). She was previously a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations (2004-2009), a member of the Advisory Board of the Transatlantic Academy of the German Marshall Fund (2008-2010), and was an elected member of the Executive Committee of the European Union Studies Association (2003-2007) and served as Secretary of this association (2005-2007).

She is the author of Trading Voices: The European Union in International Commercial Negotiations (Princeton University Press, 2005) and its French adaptation, L'Union fait la force: l'Europe dans les negociations commerciales internationales (Presses de Sciences Po, 2005). She is the co-author of The French Challenge: Adapting to Globalization (with Philip Gordon, Brookings Institution Press, 2001) and its French adaptation, Le Nouveau defi francais: la France face a la mondialisation (Odile Jacob, 2002), winner of the 2002 France-Ameriques book award. She is also the editor of Speaking with a Single Voice: The EU as an Effective Actor in Global Governance? (with Eugenia da Conceicao-Heldt, Routledge, 2015), The Politics of Interest Representation in the Global Age (with Peter Hall, Jonah Levy and Wade Jacoby, Cambridge University Press, 2014), Developments in French Politics 5 (with Alistair Cole and Vincent Tiberj, Palgrave, 2013), Europe and the Management of Globalization (with Wade Jacoby, Routledge, 2010), and Making History: European Integration and Institutional Change at Fifty (with Kathleen McNamara, Oxford University Press, 2007).

Sophie Meunier has published many articles on the European Union, the politics of international trade, globalization, and French politics in journals such as International Organization, Foreign Affairs, and Foreign Policy.

She was made Chevalier des Palmes Académiques by the French government in 2012.
