For more than 15 years, CIRANO has been inviting CEOs to share their thoughts on their company's challenges in an informal context of exchange that brings together private and public partners as well as university researchers.
Our first CEO seminar of the year with Mr. Morisset, CEO of the Autorité des marchés financiers, Louise Roy, Chair of CIRANO's Board of Directors and Nathalie de Marcellis-Warin, CEO of CIRANO was held on October 20. An exchange on some of the major issues that the AMF is currently addressing: disclosure requirements related to climate change, artificial intelligence (AI) in the financial sector, cryptoactives, automated and connected vehicles, diversity on the boards of directors and senior management of reporting issuers...

Michel Magnan appointed to the Board of Directors of Desjardins Group
|
|
Michel Magnan, distinguished research professor at Concordia University and Stephen A. Jarislowsky Professor chairholder, has been appointed to the Desjardins Group Board of Directors. He brings to the board his expertise in the fields of finance, accounting and social responsibility.
Since 2019, the 6 members not from the Desjardins caisse network have been recruited based on targeted complementary expertise such as cybersecurity, risk management, information technology, actuarial science and capital markets in order to complete the diversified composition of the Board of Directors and thus support the other members in their decision-making.

André Blais, professor in the Department of Political Science at the Université de Montréal, CIRANO researcher and Fellow received the Léon-Gérin Prize awarded by the Government of Quebec. This distinction is given to a researcher who has led an outstanding career in research in the humanities and social sciences.

Collaboration between the 2021 Nobel Prize in Economics, David Card and two CIRANO researchers
|
|
David Card, a native of Guelph, Ontario, Professor of Economics at the University of California at Berkeley has been awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Economics by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, along with two other economists.
Two researchers and Fellows CIRANO, Benoit Dostie and Daniel Parent, both full professors in the Department of Applied Economics at HEC Montréal, have recently collaborated with him, including the publication of a scientific paper on « Employer Policies and the Immigrant-Native Earnings Gap ».

Catherine Haeck appointed to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Network of Research Centres (CNRC)

Catherine Haeck, Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at ESG UQAM and CIRANO Reseacher and Fellow, has been appointed to the Board of Canadian Reseach Data Centre Network (CRDCN).
The CRDCN is a reference platform for research and training for over 2,000 researchers in quantitative social sciences and health sciences in Canada.

François Vaillancourt receives the Doctor Honoris Causa distinction from the University of Geneva
|
|
François Vaillancourt, Emeritus Professor in the Department of Economics at the Université de Montréal and CIRANO Researcher and Fellow since 2004, has been awarded the Doctor Honoris Causa degree at the Dies academicus 2021 of the Université de Genève.
He received this honor for his work in the economics of language and the economic analysis of language policies.

Webinar - Launch of the Digital Competencies Index (DCI) self-assessment tool and Roundtable on the challenges of digital transformation and digital skills

During this webinar, the digital competencies self-assessment tool, developed through a partnership between ESG+ researchers and a La Croix Bleu team with the collaboration of CIRANO was presented. This tool, which is available free of charge following the launch, is adapted for simple and effective use by organizations and allows them to evaluate their digital skills profile and compare it with other respondents.
A roundtable discussion with researchers Simon Bourdeau (UQAM and CIRANO), Benoit Aubert (HEC and CIRANO) and Mustapha Cheikh-Ammar (Université LAVAL) as well as practitioners Frédéric Thomas (Senior Director and Head of Digital Transformation, Croix Bleue) and Cristina Cistellini (Vice President HR of Banque Nationale) provided an opportunity to discuss the challenges surrounding digital competencies.

Benoit Dostie, full professor in the Department of Applied Economics at HEC Montréal, CIRANO Fellow, Genevieve Dufour, CIRANO Director of Major Collaborative Projects and Marius Vigne (HEC Montréal) will present the highlights of the CIRANO report « La formation liée à l’emploi dans un contexte de transformation numérique: état de la situation » (co-authored with Marius Vigne).
This research draws on two new modules added to the ELIA questionnaire on Skills Self-Assessment and Job-Related Structured Training. With this information, we examine the means used by Quebec workers to improve their skills, and compare these means to those used by workers in the rest of Canada. Comparing with the rest of Canada, the results show that Canadian workers use a wider variety of means to train compared to Quebec workers.

Jacinthe Cloutier (Université Laval and CIRANO) and Marie-Claude Roy (Université Laval) will present the highlights of the report "Reducing Food Waste by Quebec Consumers".
This report presents the results of a study that aimed to better understand consumer behavior regarding food waste and to identify the best strategies for reducing it. A literature review on existing strategies, a survey, a food waste diary and focus groups were conducted to propose solutions to reduce food waste in households as well as in service sector businesses. |
