| In the spirit of the current Year of Education and to commemorate the launch of the book Le Québec économique 7: Éducation et capital humain—compiled under the direction of Marcelin Joanis (professor at Polytechnique Montréal and CIRANO Vice President) and Claude Montmarquette (Emeritus professor and CIRANO fellow)—CIRANO will host an event bringing together the authors of the book and stakeholders from the sector to explore the challenges Quebec’s education system is facing today.

| On the occasion of the 7th Ouranos Symposium, short videos targeted at a general audience were recorded to showcase the broad range of activities and perspectives on the ground as well as the diversity of the actors. Nathalie de Marcellis-Warin (professor at Polytechnique Montréal and CIRANO’s President and Chief Executive Officer) was one of 12 people interviewed.

BOURSTAD Stock Market Challenge 2018 – Launch of the registration campaign

| On January 10, 2018, CIRANO and its main partner in this activity, the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF), launched the registration campaign for the 31st edition of the BOURSTAD Stock Market Challenge. This year, under the patronage of Mr. Louis Lévesque (Chief Executive Officer of Finance Montréal), participants in the BOURSTAD Stock Market Challenge manage a virtual portfolio of $200 000 which they invest in various financial instruments.

Expert Committee on Guaranteed Minimum Income

| Dorothée Boccanfuso, professor at Université de Sherbrooke and CIRANO Fellow, presided over the Government of Quebec’s Expert Committee on Guaranteed Minimum Income. She was assisted by two experts in the field of governmental income-support policy: Jean-Michel Cousineau (professor at Université de Montréal) and Raquel Fonseca (professor at UQAM and CIRANO fellow).

| CIRANO partnered with the Industrial Alliance Research Chair on the Economics of Demographic Change to organize a workshop in Montreal under the heading Facing Demographic Change in a Challenging Economic Environment. This event assembled speakers from across North American and further afield, welcomed by professors Hafedh Bouakez (HEC Montréal), Raquel Fonseca (ESG UQAM and CIRANO fellow), and Kevin Moran (Université Laval and CIRANO fellow), as well as some forty other participants, mostly representing academia and governments. |
